Tarutung is a nickname for durian fruit wich in Batak language called Tarutung. So, for the name of Tarutung City is a nickname for the capital of North Tapanuli as The City of Durian. Until the 19th century, Tarutung used to be crowded by people arround for trading. They were came from Silindung, Humbang Hasundutan, Samosir, Toba, Dairi, and also came from South, wich is Pahae, Sipirok, Sibolga and Barus.
At first, the trading was held in a village centered under the Banyan Tree was called "Onan" Sitaru (Barter Market) in Saitnihuta Village. The sistem of trading was still using barter sistem, like exchange goods to another trader, food's, cattle, salted fish, salt, rice, and tobacco.
When there's a war, between the Bonjol's brother in 1816 -1833, the trade activity was stoped by the the troops of Bonjol's, who has take over the North Sumatera. After the war end's, the activity of trading was back in business but it's not in the same place. It was held under the "Tangsi" territory who's controlled by The Dutch. Tangsi was near from the Military base of the Dutch, wich is profitable for the Dutch troops to buying their needs. To signify the place, the Dutch planting the Durian Tree to make all people know's that the center of the trading market it's in Tangsi.
